The metal is a stainless steel & nickel mix. It's a good strong chain for being so delicate looking. Any regular jewelry cleaner will keep it looking new for years. As long as you dry it off if you wear it in the shower or swimming, it will keep it's "sparkle" too. It is a good quality chain.The only time I've ever had it discolor is when it was left wet overnight. (I sell this type of jewelry in my store. This question comes up often.) Hope this helps!

P.S. When you see the words "metal alloy", this is the usual makeup of it. Sometimes it includes Zinc as well. :)
