Description

The listing, 1951 BOWMAN VIC WERTZ CARD #176 DETROIT TIGERS has ended.

This card is admittedly in rough shape, but not too bad for a 66 year old card, and is still a Great Vintage card of a Detroit Tigers Legend! Wertz was a 4 time All-Star Right Fielder who had 266 Home Runs, and 1178 RBI's in his career. Wertz also played for the Cleveland Indians, Boston Red Sox, Baltimore Orioles, and Minnesota Twins in his 17 year career. He played from 1947-1963.
Questions & Comments
Original
In game 1 of the 1954 WS, Vic Wertz, who had already tripled in two runs, comes up with two men on and hits one that looks like another triple, but rookie Willie Mays makes the catch and fires to first at the old Polo Grounds.

Giants 5
Indians 2

Wertz was with the Indians in 1954. The Indians won 111 games and reached the World Series in 1954. Mays made the catch in the 1954 World Series.

The 1951 World Series was New York Yankees vs. New York Yankees. Mays was a rookie in 1951 not 1954.

Yeah I was thinking about the rookie part, not the catch. I tried to edit it but it doesn't allow you to do that. Lol

It was 54. 51 Yankees beat Giants. That was the year of Thomson's HR off Branca to send the Giants to the ws.

Yup and Mays was in the on deck circle when Thomson hit the home run!

Dusty Rhodes hits a walk off three run Homer to win Game 1.

Larry Doby, an African American was on second, and Al Rosen, a Jew, was on first when Vic Wertz hits into baseball's version of The Catch.

I wonder if he really held the baseball bat that way.

He batted left handed, so I am guessing that is after his follow through.
