Perfect, authentic Murano (Italian) glass clown. Vintage/antique WITH the original sticker!

I started the bidding low so everyone can play ...

Absolutely perfect with no flaws or chips, this Murano glass clown sculpture is 7 inches tall ~ a perfect size for display!

The label (see photo) features a Venetian gondola. It is from the J.I. company, which imported glass during the 40's and 50's for retail and specialty stores.

This style of small-ish Murano clowns retails for up to $70 in perfect condition, with the sticker. A nearly identical one is on ebay at the moment priced at $55.

This particular piece shows off MANY of the fantastic skills developed by the Venetian glassmakers.

❥ BIG clown feet and buttons
❥ Perfect hands with detailed fingers
❥ Gorgeous clown ball with stretched stripes
❥ Adorable smiling face
❥ Sweet top hat
❥ Ruffled "tutti frutti" style collar
❥ Gorgeous zanfirico style glasswork in the body (also sometimes called latticino style).

Zanfirico is a technique invented by the Venetian glass makers on the island of Murano, Italy. Fine filigree canes are stretched and twisted to form lattice patterns. The Zanfirico technique for more than 500 years, when it was originally known as 'Filigrana a Retortoli'.

Clowns are often made with leftover "end of day" glass .. little blobs of glass that would go to waste, so the the artists dabble together unique and interesting pieces. This clown may have taken many days to complete, since it has so many different styles of glass making included.

I LOVE vintage Italian glass and collect mid-century bowls and ashtrays. It is always fun to figure out when and where something was made ... this is a SPECIAL listing for Listia ... I never see nice mid-century glass here.

Bid early and often, and GOOD luck!

Thanks so much Susan!

I love the mid-century but prefer the glass bowls, which usually are ashtrays, but I also like the big fish sculptures.

I won this clown at a local auction that had several other pieces of vintage glass ... no other Murano, unfortunately. I might list some of those also ... nice OLD uranium depression style pieces ... they GLOW like crazy. I bought a pair of blacklight flashlights just to check them out! On Amazon, of course!

And, to check for cat accidents. Surprisingly, I didn't find much ... whew!

Wow, one from the 70s??? That is super cool! I was thinking of getting a black light strip to display some of my glass. Working on that ... those light strips are SO easy to use. I have them in white I use on shelves. They are like a ribbon, very easy to place where you want it, unlike the rope lights I formerly used!

Wow, what an education I just got just from reading the comments! That clown is amazing and my daughter Katie would love it, besides being an actress she is also a trained mime and collects clowns! Definitely a Listia showcase item! You and Susan are very smart ladies :-)

Thanks so much Mama ... I really like mid-century glass. I got started with it when I used to sell on ebay. I attended a weekly auction to buy collectibles to list on ebay, and the only ones I ever kept long-term were the Murano art glass. I also have some antique glassware such as amberina Moon and Stars pattern, and a few other things like that, but mid-century Italian glass is the only thing I really look for, in terms of collecting.

Don't need too many dust-collectors, I've got enough and probably should put some on Listia!

I bought a portable black light for my husband who stays in hotels all week so he could check the sheets before he gets in, he's had a couple of incidents where he actually had to call the hotel management for stains that were on the sheets and bedspreads! I know, gross, but better safe than sorry!

That would be scary just to TAKE a black light into a hotel room. I'm glad he finds MOST of them clean ... LOL ...
