Marigolds add a cheerful spot of color to any garden and some people believe the plants help keep rabbits away. A large number of marigold varieties are readily available to home gardeners, from 6 inches to 4 feet in height, and orange, yellow, cream, red, maroon in the mixed color varieties. Plant seeds indoors in March or April and move them to the outdoors after all danger of frost is gone. Marigolds thrive in a sunny location.

1) Place the potting mix in the bowl and mix with water until crumbly but not too wet.
2) Fill the seed tray with potting mix. Use the back of the spoon to tamp down the soil.
3) Distribute three marigold seeds in each seed tray cell. Add 1/4 inch of perlite over the seeds and gently tamp down with the back of the spoon.
4) Keep the seeds damp in a warm area indoors. The seeds will sprout in just a few days.
5) When larger leaves appear, cut the two weakest seeding plants in each cell to the dirt with the scissors. Transfer the marigold plants into the 3-inch pots.
6) Before transferring marigolds to a sunny spot in the garden, harden the plants by moving them outside for one hour, increasing the time each day by an additional hour, for a week.
7) The plants will bloom 45 to 50 days from germination. In the garden, remove the spent heads of the flowers for maximum blooming.
