Description

The listing, ***RARE, HARD TO FIND ANTIQUE*** 18-1900's MAN'S HEAD WALL MATCH HOLDER has ended.

This is an AWESOME HARD TO FIND CONVERSATION PIECE

This is a Rare 18-1900s plaster wall hanging, man's head, match holder, not sure if its handmade or not, hand painted, and signed with numbers only (see pictures). I've been searching for Him for Years and Still haven't found HIM, Only Similar. In books and collectible sites the prices are upwards to $900.00, and those are for the ones I actually Found.

This is an unusual plaster wall hanging of a man's head. From what I've looked up back in the 18 and 1900s, these were put near the fireplace on a wall where the matches were stored for easy access. This nice old gentleman who appears to be a Hobo or a Drunk and is wearing a top hat (has a little paint or something dripped on it) with what I guess is supposed to be a feather which is either repaired or it's the Original condition and is painted in sort of CREAMY TANISH FLESH TONES, he's wear what seems like a coat but on one side there are ridges and the other is smooth so I don't know what the Artist was going for with this. The flash takes away from the skin tones. That's why I have pictures both with and without the flash. His hat has some chipping from age which gives it character. The ragged looking edges are authentic because it's painted in those places. Chipping of paint in some areas too. He's kinda heavy.
On top of his hat there is a hole around 1.4"/3cm deep where the matches would have been stored.

He is approximately 5 x 4 3/4" x 4, measured at the widest parts.
From research I'm seeing artisans would produce these and then walked the streets selling them to servants from wealthier households.
