Description

The listing, Luffah seeds has ended.

This auction is for (10) seeds to grow luffa gourds.

Luffa gourds (also spelled "loofa" or "loofah"), are sometimes called "dishcloth gourds" or "vegetable sponges." Luffa gourds are grown primarily for their fibrous tissue skeleton, which is commonly used as a bath or sauna sponge when left to dry out on the vine, but young fruits, less than 7 inches long, can be cooked and eaten as squash or substituted for cucumber in salads.

The vines and leaves of this plant resemble the look of a cucumber plant. Its vines can reach lengths of 15 feet or more! They make an excellent summer screen plant as they love climbing up fences.

You can start seeds indoors several weeks before the desired transplant date. Seeds can take up to 2 weeks to sprout. Pre-soaking in warm water for 48 hours will speed germination. Set transplants out as soon as the soil has warmed, around mid-May, then protect the plants from frost in both spring and fall. Plant one to three plants in a hill, with hills at least 6 feet apart.

I do not have a green thumb and with snow birding Not sure when harvest is suppose to be. We come back from Florida the beginning of May. Can you help me please. How often to water and what kind of soil. Outdoors can they grow in a pot. Florida soil is very sandy, shade or sun and is 1/2 a day of sun ok. My sponges have always been bought on a loofah farm on the Gulf coast of Florida but the one I have is too hard and hurts. Do you have the recipe for loofah soaps where the loofah is right in the soap? I have made them but as I say my loofah was too hard. If you pm me your email I can send you a photo or send it to my email. Carolyn .....my neighbor has a very green thumb. If you use them as a privacy wall can you just leave it up year round in Florida? Sorry for all the questions. I am going to print your instructions.
