My Father, R.I.P., Raphael / Refael, passed away last November (11/29/17) at age 87. He was a kind man & loving husband and father. He died from a cruel vicious disease called Alzheimer. This disease robbed his personality, his memory and his cognitive ability. His tremendous suffering was heartbreaking to us. This auction is to commemorate him and help medical research of Alzheimer's disease move forward until a cure is found. Alzheimer's is 1 of the top 10 leading causes of death in the USA. 1 in 3 people past age of 80 suffers terribly from this debilitating disease.

The artwork is an illustration that first appeared on the 2008 42-cent Alzheimer's Awareness stamp. It shows an older woman in profile with a hand on her shoulder, the suggestion of sunlight behind her, and clouds in front of and below her. On the 2008 stamp, she was facing left; the artwork for this stamp shows her facing right to help differentiate between the two stamps. The price of the stamp includes the First-Class Mail single-piece postage rate in effect at the time of purchase plus an amount to fund Alzheimer’s research. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, more than 5.3 million Americans age 65 and older are estimated to have Alzheimer's disease, predicted to rise as the population ages. The disease is named after Alois Alzheimer, the German physician who in 1906 discovered and described two hallmark signs of the disease in the brain: clumps of amyloid protein fragments and tangles of tau protein fibers and linked them to observable symptoms.

Symptoms can include:

loss of memory;
problems with speech and language;
inability to perform familiar daily tasks;
trouble interpreting visual images, spatial relationships, and other sensory information; and
changes in personality and behavior such as depression, apathy and agitation

Thanks hun; I do miss him.
How uncanny and eerie that the stamp came out November 30th
which was the exact day of his funeral.

So sorry to read your mom, may she rest in peace, had Alzheimer's too. The last two years he was sick were bad but the last two months he really suffered excruciatingly. I know he feels no pain now but it's now my mother and I that feel the pain instead of his absence. It's especially sad when the death occurs right around the holidays. Thanks for your comments and for visiting my auction and for bidding.

Discuss life, history or current events with him and he will be delighted.
Thanks - in anticipation - to everyone who responds to my appeal* & connects with
"him". I am an agnostic, not a Hindu, by faith and love playing with words ;-)

Sadly my father was unable to think at all for over a year. He could not express himself at all. When he did speak, it was disconnected words, not even sentences. It made me so sad he could not say if something was hurting him or if he needed anything.

#GeorgeAdams :
I have remembered you DAILY ever since i set my eyes on this auction & wish that
you can soon overcome that debilitating "sense of loss", retain only the happy
memories so that you can move on with life without the sadness..
As everyone knows, death is just an inevitable part of "the cycle of life".

In India, there is a tradition to observe the 13th day* [ * appropriately called "13th"
- Hindi rendition TERAHVEEN pronounced "t'ay~rah~veen - where TERAH=13 ]
specifically as the last day of mourning.
Just as you do, people - family & friends - gather in remembrance for an hour or
two with a religious person { priest ? } concluding the meet with a short sermon.

Not meaning to make this a sermon of my own ;-), i only wanted to ADD a date
to the mentioned ( 2 ) coincidences :
My dad, with very mild signs of Alzheimer's starting to appear, recently turned 91 -
on 11/28/2017. He successfully fights the disease by keeping busy with his laptop .
You CAN, if you want to, help him in his endeavor; and, also veer your thoughts
away from that pervading gloomy sadness.
Find him on FB as "GSP SURI" [ the picture shows him as a 60 years old ]

Happy Birthday to your father. I hope he will have many more years of good health. If treatment is started early, some of the symptoms can be delayed.

Thank you for your deep thoughts and for visiting my auction.

A semi-postal stamp or semipostal stamp, also known as a charity stamp, is a postage stamp issued to raise money for a particular purpose (such as a charitable cause) and sold at a premium over the postal value.

Amazing "In Memory" auction for you dad. I think the timing of the stamp release date was an awesome sign from above. I'd be honored if something that unusual and super amazing happened for my dad. Good luck on your auction :-D

So sorry for your loss. My profile picture is of my dad too that we also lost to Alzheimers in 2006. I feel your pain. I also lost my grandmother to the big 'A'! just waiting my turn I guess! I try to exercise my brain daily and eat healthy! Only God can truly protect us! Condolences and blessings to you & yours!

Thank you for sharing and the kind words. Like you I believe in fate and that only God decides what will happen to all of us. I exercise my brain too as much as I can--I like to learn new things as I am curious by nature. I like riddles and puzzles. And having this hobby here on Listia of buying and selling also helps enormously. Take care and God Bless.

Sorry about your father. :( My grandmother has not been officially diagnosed yet, but we suspect she has Alzheimer's. You have my thoughts and support. I'm watching the auction, too. Good luck!

Thanks so much for sharing about your grandmother's situation. I can only hope for a cure and keep donating for this noble cause. I fanned you. Thanks for watching. Wishing your grandmother the best. My father, R.I.P., had a good full life but the pain of missing him is still somewhat raw. I will continue to pray for this heartbreaking disease to be eradicated from the face of earth. It is so very painful for those who love the patient.

I had never heard of a semipostal stamp before and didn't realize that the charity stamps were sold above the value. Great listing in memory of your dad.
