The listing, SGS GRADED MS66 1888-S MORGAN SILVER DOLLAR has ended.
This auction is for an SGS Graded at MS66, 1888-S Morgan Silver Dollar.
This coin is in beautiful shape and has a "Honey" colored toning on it.
The SGS grading service is "STAR GRADING SERVICE" and many have accused it of being a self-slabbing company that places all of its coins on Ebay. There was also the "STRATEGIC GRADING SERVICE" for a short while, but they had a completely different label. With all of the accusations being that all of their coins are graded at MS70 and not anywhere close to that being the case. I can see this coin easily being at an MS66 grade and it also shoots down the accusations of all being MS70.
I have many times sent a SGS slabbed coin to both PCGS and NGC with one that did come back with an MS70 grade and another with a grade just below what it was claimed to be by SGS. I am sure that NGC most likely gave an MS66 graded coin a MS65 grade just because they wanted to make the SGS label look bad.
Have a good look at the coin above for it is the actual coin that the winner will receive. If you know the Sheldon Coin Grading Scale, you can see that this coin could fall anywhere between MS64 and MS66.
