This is a brand new sealed Roku Express that will be shipped directly to you from Amazon Business. [Note this is not the Roku Express+ which is the newest model - if you want that, let me know and I will change the listing for you with a slightly higher price]. Roku's makes any TV a smart TV. It's a media player which when attached to your internet, will stream Netflix, Hulu, Sling TV and many other subscription TV and movie services. It will also stream free video services such YouTube and others.

Roku of various varieties are considered the "king" of streaming devices. Better than Apple TV, Kodi, Google Chromecast, Amazon Fire Stick, Nvidia Shield. The Rokus have the most channel selection and at least in terms of value, should be considered first (unless you are heavily invested in Apple's iTunes). This of course is highly debatable but I looked online and the first three reviews on Google with all the devices mentioned as keywords, all made Roku the top choice. I welcome comments either for or against that proposition. Personally we use Kodi in a real computer attached to our TV and are happy enough with but for business purposes...

No this replaces the need for a smart tv. These things like Apple TV, the Roku here, Amazon Fire, etc are little computers that make the TV Smart.

I don't have a smart TV and don't know how to hook internet to a TV, but have heard a lot of people use this Roku and like it. I currently have Direct TV and am looking to lower what I pay for cable. Before they did the digital switch-over I didn't have cable and could get the main local channels in my area but a few just fine. But when the government ordered this switch- over I could only get one channel and that was fuzzy at times. I think it forced people to get cable. Anyway, sorry for the long comment.

You can try buying an antenna for HD channels and see if that helps to get local channels. You string up the antenna on the inside of your house and there is a powered signal amplifier that boosts the signal. I have strung up one in the basement believe it or not and it gets us a few HD channels. I guess they are digital HD ones.
