The listing, Indian Head Penny US 1 cent 1881 Error ? Bullet Holes ?? has ended.

Up for bids is this old coin, it is a penny from 1881 , and it appears to have small depressions like holes that don't go all the way through, I kinda wonder if it was shot with a shotgun or a minting error ?? any Ideas?...... As always FREE SHIPPING, check out my other items please...Thank You

I am still wondering what these half holes are from.. They appear to have aged along with the coin , the patina seems to match if you know what I mean.. Perhaps back in the 1880's some guy was trying out his new drill or something and decided to practice on this penny? Anyone have any ideas?

It's possible this is a counterfeit coin, and the punches are to alert you to that.

Oh Really ..hmmm I have never encountered that before.. Do you mean like a replica coin , or like someone actually counterfeited them to deceive people and then when they were discovered the govt or some individual put these holes in it to deface it so it wouldn't fool anyone else?.. interesting theory

I'm not sure of the going rate for an 1881 in F-VF condition, but it seems reasonable. If the market is high, someone will always try to take advantage! Re-stamping dates, soldering on "CC" to silver dollars to make them appear from Carson City, the list goes on!

The only other reason I can think of is someone drilling through metal and using the soft copper as a backing material so the hole is clean all the way through. It wouldn't be a waste of an expensive coin. I doubt we'll ever know the TRUE story!

Some Indian head pennies were commonly used in the jewelry-making business, also. It is possible that the holes are those drilled to glue the coin to mounting posts. I have seen these type of holes drulled for making men's cuff links. Of course, we can't be certain.
