Description

The listing, 1876 Spain MR5 Certified (!) printers waste stamp, double impression, good conversation piece, NO CV has ended.

Up for auction is an 1876 Spain MR5 double impression stamp showing King Alfonso XIII, which was never used as a stamp, has NO SCOTT CATALOG VALUE, and is now officially certified printer's waste. Has a hinge remnant so I guess I wasn't the only one fooled. The APEX certificate that proves all this will be sent with stamp (see photo). Good conversation piece and very nice example of a double impression. I thought it was a high value error imperf MR5 and imagine my surprise. What exactly is printers waste and how did it get into circulation? Perhaps it wasn't trash worthy? Thank you for bidding. The certificate is nice....

Cool curiosity! Printer's waste is when printing mistakes are made, it's supposed to be thrown out by the printer. Sometimes it's kept by someone working for the printer and that's how it gets to the collecting community. Also sometimes, when paper is hard to get (like in war time), printers will save excess paper from other print runs (like end of the roll) and this will actually be used for printing. I think there's a US 2c Washington that was printed on printer's waste paper (but it does have a CV). I don't collect this kind of thing, but it's still worth a bid (I really hope you get a lot for it than I bid--it's pretty cool!)

Thank you so much for the information! And thank you for bidding too. There are probably some collectors who collect this sort of thing and I hope someone will see its value even if it has no Scott catalog value. I hope it also shows that it's ok to make mistakes in stamp collecting because usually you learn even more that way than before. Thank you again for your knowledge and contribution. : )

I'll point out to other potential bidders that this doesn't have a Scott CV because it's simply not in Scott catalogue. It doesn't mean it has no value. You'd need to find a Spain specialized catalogue to see if it has a value or even if it's a known error. It does look like MR5 but has no perfs. Could it be postal stationery? Or a postal card? These aren't listed in Scott.

I don't know but tend to think it is what the APS says as they've had their hands on it. But would be interested to hear any alternatives, and I agree it has value, if only in showing what is not a stamp.

no additional info regarding the imperforated version of that exact issue, but the regular issue from 1876 has stated 3 of the stamps with no perforation as about double the value

Good to know. I had seen somewhere that the double impression imperf of the MR5 was worth about $1100, which is why I sent it to the American Philatelic Society expertizing service (APEX) to have it certified. Alas, it came back as printers waste. In stamping you win some, you lose some more! Cheers.

just returned from the stamp day
So they said it depending on the price, so unfortunately too high now already as a good buy value would be 2 $ so that's reached already. But its a nice piece for sure
Congrats on the upcoming winner
