You are suppose to bring it to a boil, three times. Drian each time, then finish off with fresh water and boil, like you would greens.

To eat the leaves, that's exactly how you would do it. The seeds are also very poisonous but the berry juice makes a very good jelly if it is boiled long enough I have heard. The fresh juice can make you sick when it is fresh. It regrows from the root every summer once established, very easy and hardy to any climate but it can also be invasive if you let it get out of control. The medicinal uses are miraculous but I wouldn't approach it without a professional
