Alexander Hamilton was born January 11,1757, on the island of Nevis in the British West Indies. Some of his early childhood was spent on the neighboring Island of St. Kitts.
In 1773 he sailed for New York and there began his great career as a soldier, lawyer and statesman. In 1777 he was made a member of Washington's staff. As a soldier he fought brilliantly in 1781 at Yorktown. After the war he practiced law and served in Congress and the New York Legislature.
He was the first Secretary of the Treasury of the United States. He reigned in 1795 to reenter private practice.
Hamilton's service to the nation was great, and although his political theories were at variance with the trend of the times, he was in a large degree responsible for establishing the new country on a firm basis.
