The obverse of the coin features Christopher Columbus standing with a flag in his right hand and a globe to his left. Ships and land can be seen rising in the background.
The reverse of the coin features a split view of a fifteenth century sailing vessel and a twentieth century space shuttle. The obverse was designed by John Mercanti and the reverse was designed by Thomas D. Rogers.
