Following Utah, Nevada, New Hampshire, and Wyoming, South Dakota becomes the fifth state to have its own voluntary local currency in the form of the Goldback series. The Goldback project took off with the Utah Legal Tender Act of 2011, which allowed people to use certain types of gold as voluntary local currency within the state's borders. Goldbacks are printed with the declaration of "Specie Legal Tender Instrument," which means that the notes are authorized for voluntary use only within South Dakota's borders. These notes are privately issued and are not U.S. dollar legal tender.

The denomination, "50," is noted in the upper left, while the inscriptions "SOUTH DAKOTA GOLDBACKS" and "SPECIE LEGAL TENDER INSTRUMENT" are included to the right of the denomination. At the bottom of this face is a notation of the note's gold content, as well as the denomination spelled out, "FIFTY."
