On September 26 1986 in St Louis, MO the USPS celebrated the 98th anniversary of the birth date of Thomas Stearns Eliot, a poet, playwright, and literary critic, as the fifth addition to the Literary Arts series. Between World Wars I and II, T.S. Eliot dominated the world of poetry. An inspiration to a great many poets, Eliot was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature and the British Order of Merit in 1948. Among his most famous writings are the poems The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock, The Waste Land, The Hollow Men, Ash Wednesday, and Four Quartets; the plays Murder in the Cathedral and The Cocktail Party; and the essay "Tradition and the Individual Talent". Eliot has long been considered an obscure and difficult poet - - forbidding learned, maddening enigmatic. T.S. Eliot was born on September 26, 1888 and died on January 4, 1965 at the age of 76.
