After the first Gulf War in 1990,
Iraq found itself under a United
Nations embargo. Unable to get
banknotes from its regular
suppliers, it turned to a Chinese
printer who was willing to break the embargo. The quality of the
notes left much to be desired, as
they were lithographed and
lacked a true watermark. The
1992 5 Dinar banknote pictured
Saddam Hussein on the front and Iraq's Tomb of the Unknown on
the back.
