I've had tremendous response to the $2.5 gold coin I listed, but I consider this piece much more exciting due to its' subject matter and rarity!
This a handblown glass mushroom which was crafted into a stickpin. It is of German origin and the person I obtained it from (estate sale) said that it dates to the 1920s. The mushroom is the "Amanita muscaria", which is well-known for its psychoactive and hallucinogenic properties. It has a nickname, the "beserker mushroom", which comes from Viking shock troops being called beserkers, due to their behavior in battle after allegedly consuming the mushroom--hence the word in English "beserk", and the term "going beserk".
I can only surmise as to why the piece was created--perhaps for someone in the scientific community? That was suggested to me by the person I got it from, but who knows? Whatever the reason, I am confident this is a unique item--you won't find another...on eBay or anywhere else--believe me I've looked!!
The condition is just as amazing: no chips, cracks or broken-off pieces. The entire pin measures a mere
1.125" in length, and the actual glass piece measures .5" long and .25" wide and has great detail. Every time I look at it, I wonder how such a small piece was crafted with such detail.
