Select a planting site with full sun and well-drained, moist, acidic soil. Since your royal poinciana tree can grow to 40 feet high and 40 to 60 feet wide, make sure there is room for it to spread out. Do not plant it close to your house, walls or pavement; the royal poinciana's expansive and superficial roots can lift a sidewalk. Make sure there is protection from high wind, as the tree's shallow roots make it vulnerable to toppling.
2
Dig a hole twice as large as the rootball, and fill the hole one-third of the way with organic compost to add nutrients.

3
Set your royal poinciana tree in the hole, making sure it is centered and straight, and backfill, watering as you go to settle the soil and prevent gaps and air holes.

Tamp the soil firmly, and apply a 2-inch layer of mulch to conserve water and protect the tree's shallow roots. Don't let the mulch press up against the royal poinciana's trunk.

Water your royal poinciana tree regularly and deeply during the growing season, but cut back drastically on water when the tree is dormant in winter.

6
Feed your royal poinciana tree with a balanced liquid fertilizer every month.

7
Prune your royal poinciana tree during its first three years to encourage strong branches. Remove all suckers--stems that sprout from the side of the tree--as well as limbs that are less than 8 to 12 feet from the ground. Remove branches that are dead, dying, broken or crossed, and prune to open up the center of the tree in order to increase sunlight and air circulation. Cut back growing tips to limit height and width, if desired.
