The tomato plant originated in the wilds of South America and has been carried to every corner of the world and bred into many different cultivars. Wild tomatoes occur naturally in green and red fruit types, but only the red are edible by humans. The tomato is also the only fruit to ever be officially named a vegetable by the United States Supreme Court. In 1893, the Court declared the tomato to be a vegetable because it is not eaten as a dessert.
