This tree is considered invasive in some parts of the southeast. Here in California, they make GREAT Shade trees. They are fast growing(1-4ft per year) depending on water and fertilizer. They have a range of colors in the fall. They can be pruned to be small and bushy like a Japanese maple or to be tall like a birch, elm or maple.

Common Name: Chinese Tallow Tree, Popcorn Tree

Scientific Name: Sapium sebiferum

Chinese Tallow Tree is a deciduous tree that may reach 60 feet in height and 3 feet in diameter. The tree has alternately whorled, heart-shaped leaves with a pointed tip. The bark is light gray and fissured. Slender, drooping spikes up to 8 inches long appear from April to June. No petals are present but the sepals are yellowish-green.

The tree is native to eastern Asia, and is most commonly associated with eastern China, Taiwan, and Japan. In these regions, the waxy coating of the seeds is used for candle and soap making, and the leaves are used as herbal medicine to treat boils. .
